This week will mark a year since the daring 'Midwifery Mermaids' began their Sea Swimming challenge for charity, but they aren’t stopping yet!
The Torbay Hospital Maternity ‘Mermaids’ have nearly completed their 365 Swim Challenge! They’ve smashed their target of £1000, since setting themselves the challenge back in November 2020.
The ladies are all part of Torbay Hospital’s Maternity Unit, in Devon, and have all braved the cold sea conditions more than twice a week all year.
“We are donating half of the money to Cancer Research and the other half is contributing towards improving the maternity delivery suites, and make it better for the women we look after.”
Despite working long hours, the 'Mermaids' were determined to complete the challenge to sea swim twice a week, no matter the weather conditions.
They have encouraged everyone to come down and join them on their swims, with friends, family and other members of the Maternity Unit now joining in.
Sara-Jane Smith, Amanda Kanyi, Becci Dawe, Dom Heaton, Heidi Viney, Liz Smart and Rachel Warde all braved the cold sea conditions twice a week all year, without the luxury of a wetsuit.
Rachel Warde said: “I have loved taking part in this challenge, it’s really brought us all so much closer together whilst raising such an amazing amount of money for such great causes.”
Maternity Support Worker, Sara-Jane Smith said “Sea swimming has been so good for all of our mental health. I always look forward to it after a long day at work, it can be so relaxing and such good fun!”
“We wont be stopping sea swimming anytime soon! If anything, this has made us want to do it even more, so much so we have signed up again to continue next year!"
